Hi Karimah! What’s the name of your blog?
Where are you from?
Wesley Chapel, Florida.
Tell us a little bit more about you and your blog, Crafting a Fun Life.
I am a first-generation American, both parents are from Jamaica. I graduated from USF (Go Bulls!) and found the love of my life at college. We’ve been married for 8 years and have two active boys (5 & 1) who keep us entertained daily. We also have a very stubborn but loyal dachshund named Milo. I created my blog to share my love for crafts & DIY, motherhood, traveling, and family-friendly activities.
How many years have you been blogging at Crafting a Fun Life?
I started contributing for a local mom blog three years ago. I started my blog in November 2019.
Give us your best tip to staying on top of the blog/work/life balance?
My advice for staying on top of the blog/life balance is creating a schedule, stay organized and don’t overwork yourself.
Fill in the blank. What people don’t realize about blogging is…
People don’t realize there’s a lot of work that goes into creating quality content and building your brand.
What’s your favorite WordPress plugin?
Yoast SEO really helps me with creating better headlines and making sure my site meets the requirements for better reach in search engines.
What are three things you wish you knew about blogging before you started?
- Consistency is key to success.
- Networking is important.
- Pinterest is your best friend.
What skills and qualities do you think are necessary for a successful and professional blogger?
I think bloggers should be able to create relatable content that inspires their readers.
What has blogging taught you that no other career or job has before?
Blogging has given me the freedom to express myself in a creative space.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in the blog world?
Be consistent and create a content schedule.
Is there an app or business tool that you swear by?
I love Pinterest because it brings the most traffic to my blog. I also love Canva for finding free stock photos as well as creating awesome pins and InShot for editing videos.
What makes your brand, Crafting a Fun Life, different than other bloggers?
My brand is all about showing moms how to create a fun life for your family whether it’s with fun art projects, traveling or enjoying local activities. I try to show that having fun doesn’t have to cost a lot of money and to enjoy the simple things in life. I also want people to see that there are Black moms who have different parenting styles and enjoy trying new things.
What topic do you most enjoy writing about?
Creating fun crafts and activities for kids is what I truly enjoy writing about on my blog.
What would your dream partnership look like?
My dream partnership would be with Michaels creating fun art projects for kids especially for the holidays. I would also like to work with a Hilton to show that Black families enjoy traveling and fun activities. Last, Target because I spend way too much money there and love their clothing brands for boys.
What is a current blogging goal you are working on?
Increasing traffic to my blog and landing partnerships with brands.
What does a typical work day for you look like?
I’m a SAHM so my schedule is never the same. I wake up early to make sure breakfast is ready for the family. My 5-year old is currently enrolled in e-learning so I have to make sure he’s all set for online school. Throughout the day I’m trying to keep my toddler entertained so that he doesn’t disturb his brother. I spend time on my blog and catch up on social media when the toddler is taking a nap. After school is over, we spend time either playing a game my 5-year old made up or board games. Dinner is usually around 6:30/7 and we relax until it’s time for the boys bedtime at 8:30. My husband and I rotate on who bathes the boy each night. He assists with brushing their teeth then reads a story to the oldest while I read to the toddler. I spend an hour creating activities for the next day or content for my blog. The rest of the evening is spent enjoying my husband’s company.
What’s your most recent WIN with your blog?
I will be published in a local parenting magazine next month.
How has your content changed since you first started blogging?
I write about more aspects of motherhood besides arts and crafts.
What is one thing in the blogging industry that frustrates you that you wish you could change?
DIVERSITY! I wish brands realized that women of color especially Black moms are worthy of collaboration and should be paid equally.
